What is the difference between by and until?

For all you teachers and/or grammarians out there... I am an English teacher in Germany and I need help explaining the difference between "by" and "until". It's the same word in German. "Don't take the cookies out of the oven until the buzzer rings." and "By the time I get home, I want you to have finished your homework." Any pointers?
