Why should the trans, trans isomer be the thermodynamically most stable one?

The trans configuration generally creates more separation between the substituents on adjacent atoms compared to the cis configuration. Because the groups are farther apart trans configurations (not always, if there are other substituents to worry about), there is less electron-electron repulsion and therefore lower energy than in the cis configuration.
